BUT, even if you know you're great at what you do it can be awfully hard to toot your own horn or even just to talk positively about yourself. It can feel an kinda braggy. This is something that I still struggle with even after quite a few years in the business. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I try to think about how my Mom would talk about me and then tone it down just a shade because, let's be honest, Moms can be a little too confident in your abilities sometimes lol. I find this method gives me a good guideline for how to talk about myself. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Is this something that you struggle with? Do you have any tricks you use to help you overcome it? I’m an unashamed geek. I love, love, LOVE anime. Did I mention that I love anime? I’m an avid Minecrafter and play with my son on our own modded LAN server.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My Office⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I work from home so I can be there for my son every day to get him off to school on the bus and to be there when he comes home from school and, because of that, there is a healthy dose of Mom tasks mixed in with my work. I do my best to structure my working hours around his school hours to make sure that I’m fully available to both my clients and my family. Instagram post 2053081295084709299_1372216228 The WordPress CMS is an amazing platform to build a website on. I love it because, once a website is complete, its beginner friendly interface makes it easy for just about anyone to update their website all on their own. My clients usually have no trouble at all adding a blog post, updating a picture or modifying a bit of text on a page once I hand over their site to them. Unfortunately though, for a lot of non-designer/developer folks, those little changes are the only reason they ever log in to their website.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ WordPress, being a web app, is software just like the apps or programs you have installed on your device. It needs updates, just like those apps on your device. A lot of website owners don’t do those updates. Whether it’s because they aren’t aware that they have to, they dont’ know how, or they don’t think it’s necessary because things are working ok now, the end result is the same. The site is at risk.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So, what can happen if you don’t update? Most importantly, you could get hacked or break your site. Updates to WordPress core, plugins, and themes often increase security by patching vulnerabilities and strengthening against attacks so not updating can leave your site vulnerable to being hacked. Also, after a major WordPress release, a lot of plugins will get an update to ensure compatibility with the new version. Without these updates, your whole site or parts of your site may break and stop working. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In addition to the more serious issues a lack of updating can cause, you could be missing out on new features, improved website performance by skipping the updates.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you haven't updated in a while (or ever!) pop over to my blog and learn how to update safely. Hiring a designer to help you is an invaluable investment in your business but I know that the money needed to hire said designer isn’t always available when a handmade business is just spreading its wings to leave the nest.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m going to be honest with you, it doesn’t always have to cost thousands of dollars to build your brand. Even if you do hire a professional designer they aren’t always super expensive. My own logo design services start at $500, for example, and some designers offer ready-made logos (like these ones for $99 in my shop) to help get a small business off to a better start. I’ll level with you though, ready-made logos are definitely NOT as good as working with a designer to create a custom logo for your business but they’re good to get you by until you can afford to do that.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Even if you don’t hire a designer to help you at all, there are some simple things that you can do to create a cohesive brand for your business without spending much money or sometimes without spending anything at all. The trade off is time. Everything has a cost and, if you aren’t spending money you’re probably going to have to invest time instead.
